The Great Task Remaining Before Us

“The great task” yet to be accomplished was to bring into existence “that nation” that the Founding Fathers had “conceived in liberty,” one in which “all men are created equal” would be held as a self-evident truth rather than a mere proposition. Once that great task had been achieved, the Union would be saved but, more importantly, it would be made “worthy of the saving,” as Lincoln had said in 1854.
