“Creed” is a formal statement of fundamental beliefs, usually associated with religion. Dr. King reads the Declaration as a “creed”, or a set of core religious beliefs.
As Jefferson had called the principle of equality a self-evident truth, and Lincoln had called it a proposition, here King refers to that principle from the Declaration of Independence (“all men are created equal”) as America’s “creed.”
