The new nation in 1776 (“four score and seven years ago”) was conceived in Liberty by the Founding Fathers. The promise of liberty and equality was made with the Declaration of Independence, but not yet fulfilled at that time for all people – it was merely “conceived” or begun.
As the second and third paragraphs will demonstrate, it will take a great civil war to complete the work of the Founders and bring the nation that was “conceived in Liberty” in 1776 in to being with “a new birth of freedom.”
